New Safety Measures for Sunday Meetings
October 10th, 2025
As we consider the recent tragedy among our brothers and sisters in Michigan, as well as the rapidly changing nature of our world, we feel a deep responsibility to ensure that our chapel is a safe place to gather and worship. To this end, we are prayerfully implementing the following security measures effective this Sunday, October 12th:
Safety During the Sunday Meeting Schedule
Two entrances will be unlocked on Sunday mornings from 8:30am to 9:00am (11:30am - 12:00pm starting in January). Those entrances are:
The North facing entrance that opens to the foyer and chapel.
The East facing entrance that opens to the Relief Society hallway.
During that 8:30 to 9:00am period, adult brethren will be posted as greeters at both entrances. Then, at 9:00am sharp, both entrances will be shut and locked during the two-hour meeting schedule. During this time, admission into the building will be permitted only through the main North entrance and will be facilitated by brethren who will remain posted in the foyer.
What You Can Do to Help
All other entrances will have clear signage posted directing individuals to the North entrance during the two-hour meeting schedule, so we ask that you please do not open doors for anyone you do not know, and direct visitors to use the North entrance during meeting time.
We also ask that you please take the steps necessary, and make changes if needed, so that you can arrive early on Sunday mornings to enjoy prelude music, greet one another, and prepare yourselves to partake of the Sacrament. Early arrival will also make entrance to the building easier for you and your family if parking cannot be found near the North entrance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I need to leave early?
No problem. You can use any door to exit the building. But if you need to re-enter the building, you may have to use the North entrance.
What other measures are you taking to improve security?
Other measures such as emergency exit plans, situational awareness training, technology upgrades, cooperation with law enforcement, and building security assessments are being considered and pursued in coming weeks.
Are these new measures "official" church policy?
No, but Church headquarters has recently asked each ward in Zion to develop a safety and security plan for the Sunday meeting block.
Has the Church changed it's prohibition policy regarding firearms on Church property?
No.
What is the role of the brethren who will be posted as greeters and monitors during meetings?
These assignments will be carried out by the Elders Quorum and will be on a volunteer basis. They will be asked to use discernment and judgement when deciding who to allow into the building, and to communicate suspicious activity to ward leadership and law enforcement.
